A TOTAL of 27 unexploded military mortar bombs, believed used during the Japanese occupation in World War II, were discovered around Jalan Ong Sum Ping yesterday.
Military Ammunition Technicians (Ammo Tech) were called out to the government building area after workers doing excavation works for a new water pipeline stumbled upon the mortar rounds at about 11am, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson said.
The construction workers informed their supervisor, who promptly reported the find to the Royal Brunei Police Force.
The area was immediately cordoned off by the police while the Ammo Tech team worked their way to retrieve the bombs.
The ministry spokesperson said the Ammo Tech transported the mortar rounds to Penanjong Camp in Tutong and safely detonated them.
Members of the public have been urged to distance themselves from suspicious objects and immediately inform the authorities by calling the police hotline 993 or contacting the nearest police station.
