AN INVESTIGATION will be launched into an alleged terrorist group supporter brandishing the Islamic State group (IS) flag on a Brunei-registered vehicle, said the Internal Security Department (KDN or ISD).
The domestic intelligence agency yesterday confirmed that it received a report on Wednesday afternoon regarding an IS flag on a vehicle, bearing a local licence plate, which was spotted along Anggerek Desa earlier that day.
An ISD official, who declined to be named, said the relevant authorities have been informed and will look into the public tip-off.
Images of the alleged incident were recently posted by a user on social media website Reddit, showing a visibly-large monotone IS flag plastered on one of the windows of a light-coloured Toyota saloon vehicle travelling on the road.
Several members of the public commented on the thread to voice their concerns over the possibility of terrorist supporters in the country and urged the poster to report the incident to ISD.
“We don’t know how many IS sympathisers are out there. This is just one instance. There are those that we don’t see and that is what worries us most,” said one user, while another comment lamented the threat of terrorist sympathisers becoming dangerous extremists.
Police Commissioner Dato Paduka Seri Bahrin Mohd Noor in a previous report said they will not hesitate to take action against any members or supporters of the militant group in Brunei.
His warning came following the arrest of a man who was nabbed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport last December. The Malaysian detainee was believed to be using a transit flight to Brunei before heading to Turkey and subsequently to Syria to join IS.
Followers of the militant group have been known to fly to nearby countries before taking a connecting flight to Syria in a bid to evade detection by authorities.
The Brunei Government in a statement issued last September also expressed its strong condemnation of the violent terrorist acts perpetrated by IS as well as “terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and rejects extremism and radicalism”.
ISD has urged the public to report information on suspicious activities to its hotline at 133 or 8848004.
