THE Ministry of Defence (MinDef) is investigating the leak of a training video depicting a hostage crisis that went viral over social media.
A spokesperson for the ministry yesterday confirmed the 49-second video was produced as part of the Sixth ‘Semangat Waja’ Exercise for the Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF), a major military drill aimed at strengthening the army’s capability and preparedness.
“The irresponsible dissemination (of the video) is being investigated,” he said, advising the public not to be alarmed over the fictitious footage.
He also reminded the public to use social media responsibly by checking the accuracy of the information they share online, adding that it is an offence to spread false information which could disrupt public order.
Under the Public Order Act, any person spreading false reports or statements causing public disturbances can be imprisoned for up to three years and slapped with a $3,000 fine.
The leaked video was widely circulated on various social media platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp, showing a group of armed men holding RBLF soldiers hostage whilst demanding for ransom to be delivered to Pulau Baru-Baru.
Conducted in all four districts nationwide, ‘Semangat Waja’ is scheduled to take place from April 14 to 26.
