THE challenges in the promotion and socialisation of history have increased with globalisation, as borders and boundaries are removed.
This was mentioned by the Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in her speech at the Sixth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Brunei Historical Society (PESEBAR) at the Brunei History Centre recently.
Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman said that although globalisation has brought good influential values, it can also threaten the Bruneian values founded by our national philosophy, Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB), and Zikir Nation aspirations.
The appreciation and adoration of history can act as a strong and effective fortress that protects our Bruneian identity, cultural values, traditions and customs against the negative influence from outside.
During her speech, the acting minister called for the promotion and socialisation of history by suggesting the use of an innovative and creative approach that caters to the interest of youths is required in disseminating our history.
“Information technology should be used and applied in delivering our history through a more relevant channel for youths.”
She said that it is important for the young generation to familiarise and understand the history of their nation.
Datin Paduka Hjh Adina said that understanding our history can establish an emotional tie between citizens, which is important in the formation of an “integrated and cohesive community” with a sense of belonging and patriotism.
“A nation that is not familiar with its history is a nation devoid of spirit,” the acting minister said.
“History should be noted, recorded and disseminated for the continuity of our nation and civilisation.”
The acting minister extended an invitation to residents of the country to share their items of historical value with the Brunei History Centre and the Museums Department for storage and maintenance.
“We regularly hear that valuable historical materials and sources stored in personal residents are lost or damaged because of insect attacks, changes in the weather or destroyed in fire disasters,” Datin Paduka Hjh Adina said.
She said that these invaluable historical items are our national treasure and heritage, and it would be loss for the country if they were gone.
The acting minister recommended that PESEBAR, the Brunei History Centre and the Museums Department to work together in the socialisation of history as well as in storing and salvaging historical materials and sources for the benefit of the future generation.
During the AGM, a new Executive Committee Members were elected to oversee PESEBAR for the period 2014 until 2016.
